Common questions
- Do parts and labour have to be separated?
- Yes, in practice everywhere. Most states tax parts and not repair labour, so a blended line either overcharges the customer or leaves you short at filing time. Several states also require the split on the repair order by statute.
- What has to identify the vehicle?
- Year, make, model, plate and the mileage in and out. Mileage is what makes a warranty claim or a service-history dispute resolvable.
- Is a shop-supplies charge taxable?
- Generally yes, because it is a charge for materials rather than for labour. A percentage-based supplies line should be disclosed before the work, not discovered on the receipt.
