Musician and performer receipt template
A gig fee, a merchandise table and sometimes a door split, paid in cash on the night. The performance fee and the merchandise are taxed completely differently.

The lines a musician and performer actually bills
These are the preset line items this page loads into the maker. The price bands are typical, not prescriptive — set your own. The tax column is guidance: materials are taxable in most states and service labour often is not, which is a real per-state distinction covered on the state requirements pages.
| Line item | Billed by | Typical | Tax class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance fee | engagement | $100 – $5,000 | Labour |
| Door split received | night | $50 – $3,000 | Labour |
| Deposit received | each | $50 – $1,500 | Labour |
| Merchandise — shirt | each | $15 – $35 | Goods |
| Merchandise — record | each | $15 – $40 | Goods |
| Travel reimbursed | each | $25 – $500 | Not a taxable sale |
| Sound engineer subcontracted | night | $100 – $600 | Labour |
The format this trade issues
The numbered money-receipt format, which is what a performer paid in cash at the end of the night actually needs.
Get Receipt renders it as 2-part carbonless money receipt — The 2 3/4 x 7 in duplicate-book page: sequential number, received-from line, the amount written out ending in DOLLARS, a purpose line, and the signature of the person receiving payment.
The full field order, alignment grid and physical spec for that format is documented on the carbon-copy receipt book spec page.
Paid in cash?
No federal rule obliges you to issue a receipt for an ordinary cash sale, but issue one anyway: it is your record as much as the customer’s, and a sequential number that runs across the year is what makes a quarter reconcile. The cash-sale guide covers the three situations that do create a duty.
Common questions
- Is a performance fee taxable?
- Live performance is generally not a taxable sale, while the merchandise you sell at the same table almost always is. Two lines, two treatments — never one blended figure for the night.
- How do I receipt a door split?
- Record the amount actually received and the basis — the percentage and the gross it was taken from. A bare figure cannot be checked against the venue’s own count.
- Do I need a receipt if the venue pays cash?
- Give them one and keep the copy. A cash gig with no document on either side is the transaction most likely to be reconstructed wrongly at the end of the year.
Card details on this receipt
Get Receipt prints at most four card digits and has no expiry field anywhere in the app. FACTA forbids printing more than the last five digits, or the expiration date at all, on a cardholder receipt — so a violating receipt is not something this tool can be made to produce, by hand or by the assistant.
